There are some things that VA’s just can’t do without – for our own business purposes and, of course, for those of our clients.

  • Email
  • Office package
  • VoIP
  • Reliable time tracker
  • Cloud storage and sharing solution
  • Free stock photography bank

Etc. etc.

Another biggie is photo editing software.

Now I know some of you are seasoned pros when it comes to photo editing and will use nothing less than the likes of Photoshop. But for us mere mortals, we need a solution that doesn’t require a master’s degree. Something that’s intuitive and, well, just works.

Software that’s simple, effective and won’t drive us to drink!

So with that in mind, the photo editing software that I’ve fallen in love with is Pixlr.

It’s easy. It works. And there’s absolutely no alcohol needed!

What more could a busy VA ask for?

If you’re struggling to find your own solution and want to save yourself hours of time and frustration, look no further.

Pixlr provides users with two options:

  1. Online editing
  2. Desktop App for Windows and Mac

Making it super easy to get the image you need, fast.

So let’s start with the online tool.

I love programmes that don’t require any sign up. Since let’s face it, when we need something done and we’re searching for a programme that can do it fast, we don’t have time to sign up, wait for the confirmation email to come through, validate registration and then get on with it.

We just want to get on with it!

So the fact that Pixlr’s online editing software requires zero registration gives it a big thumbs up in my book.

Pixlr 1

Simply select where you want to get your photos from:

  • Computer
  • Web
  • Library

Or if you’re creating your own from scratch, click it, add it and get started.

Whilst not Photoshop, Pixlr has a surprising amount of features considering it’s free. So you will find techies using it too – making me feel less like an amateur!

As with all editing tools, you have the standard features:

  • Resize
  • Crop
  • Layering
  • Filters
  • Saturation
  • Balance
  • Text overlay

And the list goes on …

All easy to find on the main interface.

As for import / export options, compatible file formats are:

  • JPEG
  • GIF
  • PSD

But Pixlr’s key features are:

  1. Its customisable interface (although this feature does require registration)
  2. Its feature selection – no searching required, they’re all there in the main menu dropdowns at the top of the screen
  3. Its history window for quick reference that’s easy to undo / redo when necessary
  4. Its basic layer canvas tools and features – allowing users to crop manually, move, super-impose, rotate images and remove entire canvases.

Pixlr’s desktop app

Compatible for both Windows and Mac users, Pixlr’s app makes photo editing even easier.

Simply find the photo on your computer and upload.

Along with all the features of the online version, a nifty little time-saver on the desktop app is its Fast functionality.

This allows you to do some basic editing from one column selection. For example:

  • Crop
  • Straighten
  • Resize
  • Autofix
  • Red eye

And a few others.

Literally within seconds your photo can be edited exactly how you want it. Downloaded, then uploaded to your blog, social media channels, or wherever else you want it to go.

Or you can share direct to Facebook and Twitter within Pixlr’s desktop itself.

Pixlr is intuitive, even for complete novices, and provides ample tools for the majority of editing tasks you may have.

It’s clear and easy interface on both desktop and online versions requires little effort, making it, as far as I’m concerned, the best solution out there right now.

Of course, if you’ve got an alternative option that rivals Pixlr, do share it in the comments below – always open to recommendations (although it would have to be pretty amazing to move me away from this!).
